Center Hill Lake is the pride of DeKalb County. Its scenic shoreline with abundant opportunities for fishing, boating, camping or a picnic near the water make it a popular destination for visitors from all over Tennessee and the nation. Landmarks and destinations situated around the lake include The Joe L. Evins Appalachian Crafts Center , Edgar Evins State Park , Burgess Falls State Natural Area and Center Hill Dam .
Built and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, the dam was built to provide the area with hydroelectric power. Beneath its deep pool are the remnants of farms, homes and communities which once lined the Caney Fork River as it wound through DeKalb County. Containing its waters flooded many of the surrounding fields and hollows with a deep pool. The resulting lake or reservoir provides a pristine setting to fish for bass, crappie, walleye and catfish in season. Trout fishing is especially popular in the shallows below the dam.

The lake itself contains some 415 miles of unspoiled shoreline, much of it framed by dramatic vistas as forested hills reach right down to the water’s edge. There are several large marinas, boat docks and ramps situated in the many inlets which once fed the Caney Fork, with ample boat rentals and camping facilities nearby. Fishing is a regular draw to the lake in every season but especially during the summers months when fishing tournaments are regularly held.
In recent years, the area surrounding the lake has seen much activity in the construction of homes and communities to take advantage of the lake’s dramatic views and seasonal pleasures. Many of these are second homes, weekend and summer getaways, for people from Nashville and all over the world, as well as several famous country music stars. Others choose lake lots as the perfect setting for their primary residences for a rewarding lifestyle immersed in all of nature’s calming beauty. More recently, a number of condominiums have started to appear as investment property and vacation homes. For those who simply want a week or weekend escape, vacation rentals are available throughout the year through Center Hill Chalets.
